Fallece el jugador y diseñador de campos de golf Dave Thomas

El profesional y diseñador de golf inglés Dave Thomas ha fallecido este pasado martes en España, donde residía, a la edad de 79 años. Dos veces subcampéon del Open Championship, diseñó, entre otros, catorce campos en España, entre ellos el Centro Nacional de Golf, en la capital de España, actual sede de la Real Federación Española de Golf.

Después de que la artritis trajera el prematuro final a su carrera como jugador profesional, Thomas se sumergió en su otra gran pasión: el diseño de campos de golf. Junto con Peter Alliss, diseñó el famosísimo recorrido de Brabazon, en Belfry, que entre otros torneos acogió en 1985, 1989, 1993 y 2002 la Ryder Cup.

En su carrera como jugador Thomas llegó a ganar doce torneos profesionales y terminó en dos ocasiones segundo en el prestigioso Open Championship, en 1958 y 1966, además de una quinta y octava plaza logradas en 1957 y 1962.

Sin duda, sus mejores momentos como profesional los vivió en la década de los 50 y hasta 1960. Tomó parte en 19 torneos del Grand Slam y representó al equipo europeo de la Ryder Cup en 1959, 1963, 1965 y 1967 además de tener once presencias en la Copa del Mundo de golf representando al País de Galés (1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1970).

En su faceta de diseñador Thomas firmó más de 100 campos por todo el mundo, entre ellos 14 españoles (Lorca Golf Resorts, Son Parc, Abama, Centro Nacional del Golf, Roda Golf, Hacienda del Álamo, Altorreal, La Cañada, La Manga Oeste, El Brull, Playa Serena, San Roque, Alcaidesa o Almenara).

Saudi private sector investing SR200bn in Makkah projects

Osama al-Bar, mayor of Makkah, has said the Saudi holy city is witnessing mega-development projects at a total cost of over SR300bn, of which more than 60% is being implemented by the private sector, Arab News has reported. “The value of Makkah projects is estimated at SR300bn. Of these, SR100bn are governmental projects,” al-Bar said. All projects are in a construction stage, he added.

Saudi Arabia has $875bn worth of construction projects: report

According to a recent report by Global Investment House (Global), the total value of ongoing projects in the GCC region currently stands at $2.62trn, with Saudi Arabia accounting for $875bn, driven by government spending and high oil prices, Arab News has reported. The kingdom has budgeted $219bn for spending in 2013, of which almost $76bn has been set aside for capital expenditure on investment projects, the report said. “The kingdom remains focused on investing in road, railway, power and housing projects,” said Faisal Hasan, CFA and researcher at Global. “Moreover, the introduction of a new mortgage law is expected to contribute to the growth of the residential sector in the coming quarters,� he added.

KSA approved SR87.1bn in construction deals until June-end

The Saudi finance ministry has approved 1,311 construction projects in the first half of the current fiscal year, worth a total of SR87.1bn, Arab News has reported. Of the total, 302 contracts were allocated for municipal and rural projects at a cost of SR8.95bn, while 129 contracts were allocated for roads and other infrastructure projects at a cost of SR20.61bn.

Saudi lender National Commercial Bank (NCB) has said the long-awaited mortgage law approved enforced by the kingdom last year will have a limited impact on the housing market in the short term, as the legislation mainly addresses demand not supply, Saudi Gazette has reported. The expected housing stock of 7.1 million units is expected to house a total projected population of 37 million by 2023, the report further said. “Consequently, total housing stock in the Saudi housing market is expected to expand by 2.2 million units during the next 8 years, with annual demand rising from 186,000 units in 2011 to 265,000 units by 2020,” the NCB report said.

KSA approves new city project near Makkah

The governor of Makkah, Prince Khaled Al-Faisal has approved the master plan for a new residential and administrative city outside the holy city to accommodate more than 600,000 people, Arab News has reported. The Makkah Gate project to be developed on the Makkah-Jeddah Highway with private sector support, will have 45 model districts. Spanning an area of 83 million sq m, the project will include educational institutions, government offices, shopping centres, housing units and a national park.

Saudi Arabia awards contracts to build 40,000 homes

The Saudi government has signed contracts worth SR4bn to develop eight residential districts in different parts of the country comprising some 40,000 homes, Arab News has reported. The deals involve the development of 26 million sq me of plots in Jeddah, Madinah, Dammam, Al-Ahsa, Qatif, Tabuk and Al-Kharj to house 250,000 people, said housing minister, Shuwaish Al-Duwaihi. “We’ll sign more contracts in the coming months to build homes in Asir, Najran, Baha, Makkah, Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, Al-Jouf, Northern Border Region and Tabuk,” said Al-Duwaihi.
