Smart cities pursue sustainable urban development.

The basic objectives are: Environment, reduce pollution and energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption.

The basic areas in which action must be taken are:

People.

Business and Economy.

Government.

Habitability.

Transport.

Environment.

The European Union has developed a series of funding programs to promote the development of cities. Today, 40% of citizens live in cities and in the near time horizon (2030) could reach 60%. This requires that cities have a master plan of action, which will soon be necessary to qualify for the various funds of the European funding programs. The European objective is for Europe to pass a GDP of 16% to 20% GDP.

The programs are:

HORIZON 2020 endowed with 82,000 million euros.

RED.ES worth 500 million euros.

ERDF endowed with 28,000 million euros.

PLAN JUNCKER worth 30,000 million euros.

DIGITAL AGENDA worth 2,000 million euros.

JESSICA (former URBAN) worth 2,000 million euros.

In Spain there are currently 158 projects underway SMART CITIES. It is the first European country in number of projects, followed by Italy and the UK.

The operating system is:

Detection opportunity.

Consortia formation.

Project presentation.

Currently in Europe there are 480 cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants who have submitted requests for project presentation.

In Spain currently there are 62 cities that are on the Smart Cities Network.

AENOR has developed a standard which aims to regulate the development and implementation of these projects SMART CITIES, 178 standard.

ICT are central to the development of smart cities but there are two basic aspects to consider, because we can not lose sight that all actions are aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens. The two basic aspects of the urban environment and protagonists are the people and the environment
